Set on a sloping site that corners lush parkland, entrance via the first floor – where bedrooms and bathrooms are located – offers leafy views. Downstairs, the kitchen, meals and sunken lounge open up to a deck and backyard that leads to private access to the park. An interior palette of blonde timber, black, and red brick is softened by subtle, soft hues of pink, with concrete floors re-instating the robust and minimal material selection.
During the initial phases of design, the client referenced images of barns and a natural palette of recycled red bricks and zincalume. The response is a modern take on the barn to suit its urban Kew East setting; inconspicuous from the street, yet large and open at the rear to take advantage of park views.
